Should co-workers openly discuss their compensation?

When you join a company as a fresher or as an experienced employee, the first thing you are asked is to keep your compensation private.

The reason that they give is to avoid uncomfortable discussions about salary and to keep the spirit of teamwork and unity in place. But it feels more like, the companies want to keep everything under control.

Maintaining secrecy over salary is mainly to have flexibility on the compensation structure under their control and navigate the pay disparities without addressing the root cause for the same. Once everyone knows what the company is paying them and their coworkers, they will demand a salary adjustment or a work adjustment.

Who wants to work more when you know the person next to you is getting more while doing less work? But in reality, having an open salary structure with a clear goal/reward structure will provide openness in the work environment and people will start improving their work to achieve more.

The only downside I see is for the company as they will have to do a salary adjustment and be vocal about their salary increment process earlier than keeping things under the rap (why they do this, we will discuss soon)
